medical/hospital plans aren't enough: | | | The provincial medical/hospital plans (Medicare) all restrict the duration of time that they will continue to cover Canadians working abroad. It
is important to determine your province's rules regarding extension of coverage in writing before departure. | | | | Regardless of your province's extension of
coverage, you must recognize that the benefits payable for medical and in particular hospital expenses incurred outside of Canada are severely restricted. For example, a BC resident is only entitled to a maximum hospital benefit of $75 CDN per day, and an Ontario resident has a maximum of $400 CDN. These amounts will not go very far particularly in the U.S. where hospital rates can easily exceed $3,000 US per day. | | | | Before you go... | | | | Prior to your departure from Canada, please ensure that you contact your Provincial Health Authority to determine the period of time for which coverage will be extended. The duration of coverage once you depart Canada will vary from province to province. Similarly, when returning to Canada, it will be necessary to reapply for Provincial Health Care
