What does Odyssey™ cover?

The Program consists of mandatory Medical, AD&D and Contingency Benefits, plus your choice of Optional Benefits that include Long Term Disability, Group Life, Dental Insurance and Maternity Benefits.

Medical Benefits

$1,000,000 per person maximum, "reasonable & customary charges including:

  • Semi-Private Room & Board plus ICU charges;
  • Hospital Services;
  • Physicians/Surgeons;
  • Registered Nurses, Physiotherapists, with Nursing at home limited to 12 weeks per illness or injury;
  • Anaesthetics;
  • Prescription Drugs 80% reimbursement, subject to a maximum 90 day supply per claim (Lifestyle prescription medications are not covered);
  • Medical Equipment;
  • Ambulance to or from local hospital;
  • MRI $1,000 maximum per person per year
  • CAT Scan maximum $750 per person per year
  • Diagnostic X-rays;
  • Laboratory charges;
  • Accidental Dental to $5,000;
  • Paramedical Services up to $500 per practitioner per year;
  • Emergency Medical Evacuation;
  • Repatriation of mortal remains $10,000 per insured.

Benefits are payable on a medically necessary basis, and are not restricted to emergencies only.

Parent accompanying ill child under 15 - pays reasonable & customary hospital charges for parent to stay with child

Maternity Benefits

Overall maximum of 80% of the eligible expense as defined in the Medical Care Benefit of this Policy, subject to a maximum of $50,000. A statement of insurability for the newborn is not required. Medical treatment and services including hospital accommodation are covered when confirmed by a physician to be necessary in respect of childbirth. This includes pre- and post-natal treatment of the mother. Newborn nursery and Well Baby Care is in effect until the newborn reaches 15 days of age. Coverage will not apply where the expected date of confinement is less than ten (10) months from the Insured Person's original effective date.

Benefit of 60%, 67% or 70% of monthly earnings to maximum benefit of $10,000 USD per month; 30 or 90 Day Elimination Period; two year "Own Occupation" definition of Total Disability; Benefit payable to age 65 if totally disabled; Pre-existing conditions exclusions clause.

Group Life Insurance

Underwritten by
Hauteville Insurance Co.

Available in units of $50,000 to maximum of $500,000 USD for both employee and spouse. Dependent children $5,000 or $10,000.

Dental Insurance

Underwritten by Lloyds of London

No deductible - 100% reimbursement of basic and 50% of major Restorative Services to a combined Annual Maximum of $2,000 per year. 6 month waiting period for Major Restorative Services.

Optional Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Additional coverage up to $500,000 (including mandatory $25,000)

Eligibility & Terms

Who is eligible for coverage?
Expatriate workers and their spouses under age 70, and accompanying dependent children from 15 days to under age 18 (24 for full-time students), are eligible for coverage while travelling outside their home country of permanent residence on temporary or permanent foreign assignment, including vacation travel incidental to the assignment, not exceeding 90 days if following the completion of the assignment. (Coverage in home country restricted to 90 consecutive days per trip during periods of Foreign Assignment for Emergency Medical Care, assuming premium has been paid to include that geographical area.) Foreign nationals outside their home country of permanent residence may also be covered under this Program when on foreign assignment.

In order to be eligible for coverage, the applicant (not necessarily the dependents) must be employed on a full-time basis. Students (unless applicant's dependent) are not eligible.

Odyssey™ coverage is available for business travel outside the home country of permanent residence for a minimum of 3 months. Rates in effect at the commencement of a foreign assignment shall apply for the duration of the assignment, subject to a maximum of 12 months. Each expatriate employee must compete a Health Statement for themselves and any accompanying family members to be approved by the insurer before coverage can commence.

Eligibility Provisions

Odyssey provides worldwide protection for Canadian citizens and Foreign Nationals under age 70 on temporary or permanent foreign assignment, as well as Optional coverage for returning Canadians awaiting coverage under their respective Provincial Medicare Plan.

(Coverage in home country is restriced to 90 consecutive days per trip during periods of foreign assignment for Emergency Medical Care, assuming premium has been paid to include that geographical area)

Eligible dependents accompanying the Applicant on foreign assignment may also be covered. This includes the spouse under age 70 and unmarried dependent children from 15 days to age 18, or age 24 if a full-time student.

Medical Evidence Requirements

Medical evidence of insurability in the form of a Health Questionnaire must be provided by the Employee, and each eligible dependent accompanying the employee. Application must be made and health evidence supplied prior to departure. Coverage will only commence after approval by the insurer.

Coverage may be subject to specific exclusions or a surcharge based on the health information provided.

Commencement of Coverage

12:01 a.m. on the day the contract commences, or on the date of approval by the insurer.

Termination of Coverage

On the contract anniversary date to which premiums have bee paid, or the contract termination date to which coverage has been extended. Upon return to Canada for medical reasons. Age 65 for LTD coverage only.

War Risk Coverage Included

Yes, all Benefits, including in the event of many acts of war or terrorism, unless the insured has been an active participant, rather than an innocent victim at the wrong place and time. Defined exclusions in the event of war between major powers. There is an exclusion for nuclear, chemical, biological acts of terrorism.

Provincial Extensions

The Odyssey™ Expatriate Benefits Program is designed to provide benefits over and above those paid by the extended provincial health care plan benefits. Extensions of coverage to employees on temporary foreign assignment vary from province to province and are constantly changing.
